Feds drop 5-year probe of Perata – no charges
San Francisco Chronicle
attorney’s office in San Francisco which originally supervised the long-running investigation told Perata’s lawyers last year that the former lawmaker would not be prosecuted in the kickbacks case. But the FBI then took its evidence to the U. attorney in Sacramento in hopes of obtaining an indictment there. Perata’s lawyers complained bitterly about the move contending that the FBI was illegally trying to sidestep the statute of limitations in the case and suggesting that the probe was politically motivated. “As the entire country knows by now the Bush administration has been the subject of several inquiries pertaining to the selective prosecutions and the unfair and highly politicized targeting of Democratic politicians” Perata’s lawyer George ‘Connell wrote to the U.

Their “near agreement” represents a dramatically scaled-back plan that includes two prison hospital facilities one possibly built in San Joaquin County. “We’re fairly far along with the environmental review process in Stockton and in San Diego” said J. Clark Kelso the court-appointed receiver who oversees prison medical care in the state. But neither he nor California Corrections Secretary Matthew Cate would say whether the Stockton area was more or less likely to be chosen.

Hydrogen Road Tour pauses in W. Sacramento to make case for fuel …
Sacramento Bee
While it would be a stretch to say the Hydrogen Road Tour became something of a funeral procession the news did dampen the parade. “We’re on the verge of having fuel-cell vehicles as a practical alternative” said Dave Barthmuss spokesman for General Motors’ environment and energy group as the vehicles rolled toward Sacramento. The group stopped in West Sacramento on Thursday to celebrate the 10-year anniversary of the Fuel Cell Partnership. The partnership serves as both a shared research station and a public relations hub educating the public on emerging fuel-cell technology. Barthmuss and others say they are hopeful that Congress and the Department of Energy will restore funding. The bama administration has proposed cutting $100 million from the current-year budget of $169 million to free up resources for technologies that appear more promising. Major obstacles remain for hydrogen-powered vehicles even after decades of research into their promise of zero-emission transportation.
