Von Wafer donated 13 points and Shane Battier recorded 12 points and five rebounds in the win Houston’s third in a row. Houston moved a half-game in front of idle San Antonio for first place in the Southwest Division with the victory. The Rockets also moved a half-game in front of idle Portland and the Spurs for third place in the Western Conference.

Sacramento sheriff wants to remove county manager

Sheriff John McGinness says the county’s executive officer failed to provide local elected leaders with the information needed to head off the county’s budget woes. McGinness called for Terry Schutten’s removal from office in an op-ed piece in Thursday’s Sacramento Bee. It takes an unanimous vote by the Board of Supervisors to fire the chief executive. Schutten says he and other county officials have been working diligently to find solutions to the economic crisis.
Bird strike sends jetliner back to Sacramento airport

10 2009 – 12:00 am| Page 3B A United Airlines jet headed from Sacramento to Chicago made an emergency return landing at Sacramento International Airport Thursday afternoon after striking a bird during takeoff. Sacramento International Airport officials reported that the jet carrying 130 passengers was undamaged and there were no injuries. The incident involving Flight 332 took place just after 2 p. The bird struck the nose cone United officials said.

Coupled with deteriorating conditions at Modesto Junior College the meet simply ran its course. Initial plans had the meet moving to Sacramento State’s Hornet Stadium next month but logistics prevented a smooth change of venue in time for a meet May 9 so organizers hope to hold a similar meet in 2010 probably in June. “I can’t tell you how disappointed I am” said Gregg Miller Modesto Relays meet director. “It’s been a battle with (primary sponsor) Save Mart; they’re having their share of hard times. The big problem is it took so long to get things negotiated and signed. “We didn’t have a lot of time to do marketing so we decided rather than half-ass this thing let’s regroup and do it right.
