More children dying from abuse in Sacramento Co.

—A new report finds the number of children who died of abuse and neglect in Sacramento County nearly tripled last year. The self-assessment by Child Protective Services said 11 children died in 2008 from abuse and neglect compared with four in 2007. The agency also has fallen significantly behind the state average for response times after it receives reports of possible abuse. The report found that 82 percent of calls requiring an in-person response were answered within 24 hours compared with a state average of 96 percent. The agency was scheduled to deliver the report Tuesday to the Sacramento County Board of Supervisors.

is shearing another 1600 jobs in a cost-cutting spree that has clipped nearly one-third of the newspaper publisher’s work force in less than a year. The latest reduction in payroll announced Monday follows through on the Sacramento-based company’s previously disclosed plans to lower its expenses by as much as $110 million over the next year as its revenue evaporates amid a devastating recession. The layoffs will start before April. Several of McClatchy’s 30 daily newspapers including The Sacramento Bee and The Kansas City (Mo. ) Star already have decided how many workers will be shown the door. After the latest purge McClatchy will have saved at least $300 million annually with management now confident it will exceed the $110 million target set for the latest cuts although the company didn’t specify by how much.

River search continues for 3 Sacramento teens

—Three Sacramento-area teens remain missing after their SUV was pulled from the Feather River north of Sacramento last week. The teenagers left for an overnight trip to the river on Wednesday. Their sport utility vehicle was discovered in the water the next day. They have been identified by relatives and authorities as 17-year-old Aleksandr Kaplinsky 16-year-old Bohdan Lytvynyuk (BH-dan lie-TIN-ska) and 18-year-old Roman Pristupa (pris-too-PAH). Sutter County sheriff’s deputies and volunteers have been combing a six-mile stretch of the river looking for evidence.
Fresno Bee workers approve pay cuts to save jobs

The cuts are part of a move by its owner McClatchy Co. to eliminate 15 percent of its work force. Workers at The Sacramento Bee and The Modesto Bee already have agreed to concessions in recent days. Under The Fresno Bee’s proposal employees earning between $60000 and $89999 a year will have their pay cut 6 percent. Employees making $35000 or less won’t face a salary reduction. Publisher Will Fleet said he couldn’t comment.
