Calif. survey finds Delta smelt at record lows

—A new survey from the California Department of Fish and Game finds Delta smelt are hovering at the brink of extinction. The department’s fall population survey of fish species in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta concluded in December. It found the smelt at its lowest point in 42 years of record-keeping and two nonnative fish the American shad and threadfin shad also at record lows. The Delta is a freshwater source for two-thirds of California’s population and millions of acres of farmland. Drought pesticides and herbicides invasive species and state water pumping are some of the factors contributing to the region’s troubles.

LA schools chief says no midyear teacher layoffs

Ramon Cortines announced Friday that he will not use authority granted by the Board of Education last week to send out layoff notices to nearly 2300 teachers. Cortines says there is a lack of clear information from Sacramento so he made the decision based on Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger’s latest proposal which includes more flexibility for school districts to deal with economic hardship. The superintendent warns that the nation’s second-largest school district still faces difficult cuts. A plan being prepared for the board calls for layoffs at every level of the district in July. Sacramento mayor open to homeless camps

23 (UPI) — Sacramento Mayor. Johnson told the Sacramento Bee he was open to the idea which has gained the support of community activists local lawmakers and Sacramento police who say the current system of rousting transients from illegal campsites is effective. “I don’t know if it’s something every city should do” said Johnson “but it’s certainly something our city should be looking at.
