McClatchy cancels dividend Sacramento Business Journal

will indefinitely suspend its quarterly dividend the latest effort to preserve cash for the financially strapped newspaper chain. The Sacramento-based company — publisher of The Sacramento Bee and 29 other daily newspapers — took the aggressive action in order to pay down its $2 billion-plus debt a growing concern for analysts and investors. The company’s third-quarter balance sheet reported $5 million in cash on hand down from $25 million at the end of last year. McClatchy (NYSE: MNI) has been cuttings costs with buyouts and layoffs during the past year including dozens in The Bee newsroom. About 2500 positions have been eliminated from Anchorage Daily News to The Miami Herald. The company on Tuesday declared a first-quarter dividend of 9 cents per share payable to April 1 to shareholders of record on March 11.

In a letter to parents Tuesday Loretto High School principal Helen Timothy says only 80 prospective students sat this year for entrance exams that normally draw 175 girls. The 54-year-old school has already seen enrollment drop from 559 girls three years ago to 389 this year. Timothy says increased competition from other private and charter schools and rising transportation costs for parents mean the decline is likely to continue. The school will close in June.

- A 38-year-old inmate at the Sacramento County Jail was arrested Monday in connection with the killing of his ex-wife more than a year ago. Augustine Munoz is accused of killing 42-year-old Jill Alamo the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department said.
