com Published Tuesday Jun. 03 2008 A political mailer that hit Sacramento’s mailboxes Monday touts a slate of candidates it dubs “The Team for Democratic Voters. ” A kicking donkey graces the logo along with the news that “The Democratic Party was established in 1823. “But one of the candidates the mailer backs is Sacramento County Supervisor Susan Peters – a Republican. Another is mayoral candidate Kevin Johnson who is indeed a Democrat – but not the Democrat supported by the party’s local central committee. Mayor Heather Fargo won that endorsement.

" A coalition of religious and conservative activists submitted 1. 1 million signatures for the ballot measure. Last month the California Supreme Court ruled that state prohibitions against same-sex marriages were unconstitutional and officials said such marriage ceremonies could begin later this month.

According to local officials the two rivers have claimed 43 lives in Sacramento in the past five years. On Monday water safety and rescue workers joined with Sacramento County Supervisor Roger Dickinson and City Councilman Kevin McCarty in calling for emergency legislation to prevent so many drownings. Dickinson and McCarty said they are introducing companion urgency ordinances that would make it a crime for parents to let their children under age 18 swim without life jackets in public waterways in unincorporated Sacramento County and the city of Sacramento.

– The Oakland A’s today announced that left-handed pitcher Lenny DiNardo has been outrighted to Triple-A Sacramento. DiNardo was designated for assignment last Friday. DiNardo was 1-1 with a 10. 24 ERA in five games two starts with Oakland. He was on the A’s Opening Day roster and appeared in four games before he was optioned to Sacramento on April 26.

03 2008| Page 2C New Sacramento State men’s basketball coach Brian Katz has hired Terry Battenberg a veteran coach with strong local ties Brady Bergeson and Dominique Bukasa as his assistant coaches. Travis Okamoto will work as the Hornets’ director of basketball operations. Battenberg a Sac State graduate who has written two books on post play coached at Jesuit El Dorado Ponderosa and Union Mine high schools American River College and Montana Tech. He also was an assistant at Oregon State. Bergeson spent the past six seasons as an assistant at Metro State.
