22 2008| Page 3G Dropping a letter into a U. Postal Service mailbox is usually smooth and simple but now an old mail-theft scam is back in Sacramento postal officials warned last week. The scam involves spreading a sticky substance inside outdoor mailboxes to prevent mail from dropping in. Some victims may be unaware that the mail they placed in the box is stuck within reach of scam artists who later steal the letters postal officials said.

Drexel announces master’s programs for Sacramento school

22 2008 Philadelphia’s Drexel University announced plans Thursday to offer nine master’s programs in Sacramento. The university which is hoping to open a 6000-student campus on land in Placer County also will establish a $10 million fellowship fund to help Sacramento students with tuition. The Drexel Center for Graduate Studies will be located in an office building at One Capitol Mall in Old Sacramento. Students would take classes at the center and online. The center will open in January 2009 with five master’s programs: business administration engineering management higher education information systems and library and informations services. 22 2008| Page 3B Authorities on Wednesday arrested a Texas woman accused of defrauding at least two Sacramento-area couples and adoption agencies by lying to them that she was pregnant and would give up her baby for adoption. Detective Jim Hudson of the Placer County Sheriff’s Department said Belinda Ramirez 26 of Alice Texas bilked a Placer County couple and an El Dorado County couple each of $1000 for birth expenses. The adoption agencies lost about $8000 to process the adoptions he said. “The victims themselves are very upset not for the loss of the money but for the emotional roller coaster that the suspect has put them through” Hudson said. Ramirez allegedly contacted the Placer County adoption agency on May 10 under a different name saying she was scheduled for a Caesarean birth on May 15 in San Antonio Hudson said.
