com Published Thursday Apr. 24 2008 The annual Sacramento Jazz Jubilee won’t be held until May 23-26 but the Sacramento Traditional Jazz Society is enabling jazz lovers to get warmed up earlier. The Jazz Society is sponsoring a series of pre-Jubilee events throughout the region. All are free or low-cost and are open to the public. “We’ve always done pre-events” says Gene Berthelsen executive director of the Traditional Jazz Society which puts on the jazz festival “but we just haven’t publicized it that much. ” New this year is a series of concerts slated for May 18 at vineyards in Amador County.

24 2008| Page 1B Three internationally known artists have been selected to propose and ultimately design art pieces for Sacramento’s planned airport expansion. 5 million budget the works these artists produce – and the new airport terminal itself – will define millions of visitors’ first impression of the region. The artists selected Wednesday – Donald Lipski Lawrence Argent and Christian Moeller – will be asked to propose and then design art that will be integrated into the building’s architecture. The selections were made by the Sacramento Metropolitan Arts Commission.

24 2008| Page 2D It seems simple enough: Give people who wear hearing aids a WiFi-style boost that allows them to hear their TV sets without blasting other people out of the room. The technology – an induction loop system – is in wide use in northern Europe but has barely made a blip in the United States where 31 million people have impaired hearing. Now a Sacramento audiologist is working on changing that. Julia Tanner who practices in the Campus Commons area says her patients love the system she has pushed for more than a year. “Even with a mild hearing loss which is getting more and more common as we age hearing something that’s across the room clearly is difficult” Tanner said.

Sacramento Police Det. Mike Wood is scheduled to appear tonight on “The CBS Evening News with Katie Couric. Wood who has been investigating real estate fraud for three years was invited to talk about a growing national problem as more homes go into foreclosure — “professional squatters” moving into vacated bank-owned homes. Wood said he is both nervous and excited to be interviewed on national television but he is happy to do it because it will help alert people to this fraud.
